February is National Children’s Dental Health month and Mohave Community College second year dental hygiene student, Yvonne Ramirez, decided she would be the tooth fairy to Bullhead students.

Ramirez says “ I am currently in the Community Dental Health class and we are required to visit area schools to promote healthy oral hygiene habits and provide children with the education to build these habits. I decided to dress as the tooth fairy to get the attention of the kids.”

Ramirez recently visited Diamondback Elementary school and presented goody bags of dental care products to children. Ramirez and fellow students will be visiting additional area schools in the near future.

For more information on the dental hygiene program at MCC please contact Tracy Gift at 928.704.7793 or email her at tgift@mohave.edu. It is a fantastic time to stop in and see your advisor so that you can have all your questions answered and verify you are on the right track. Once registration starts for spring it can mean hours of waiting to see an advisor and you will not get as much face to face time. So stop in and visit for a bit and let's see how we can assist you in accomplishing your goals.

Monday Morning

Well it's the first Monday Morning of October. Joe’s journey started while on tour with his band, Mychildren Mybride. Doing his MCC distance education homework at a Starbucks a teenager recognized him from his band and told him about the MTV contest for college students. Ultimately Joe entered a video and was a finalist in the search for the Mountain Dew contest to represent a new flavor of Mountain Dew and get a TV show on MTV University. With all the press coverage Joe’s story became the talk of the entire community. Joe thrilled with all the coverage said, “friends from all over the country were calling saying they saw my contest video on MTV and were voting for me”.

Although Joe did not win the contest he was offered an exciting opportunity with MTV University. MTV executives were so impressed with the success of Joe’s band they did not want him to quit the band and host a program full time. So they offered him another opportunity. Joe will be hosting music videos while on tour. He will pick video’s of music he likes to listen to and introduce them on MTVU and talk about himself and the college he attends to University students throughout the country. It is hoped his videos will start airing in late fall. Mychildren Mybride has recently released their new album “Lost Boy” and have signed with Tooth and Nail label, the Largest Christian Record Label in the United States. Their success has also led to their videos being shown on MTV.

Visiting MCC while on a short vacation, Lengson said “It has been an overwhelming experience for me. Not many people at the age of 20 have had the opportunity of touring the country in a band, signing with a record label and talking to MTV executives.” Lengson and the band will start a full U.S. tour on October 2 with their kick off at the Las Vegas House of Blues. Even with his hectic schedule he continues his MCC classes online and looks forward to getting his AA degree and moving on to a university to continue his education.

Thanks!!

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_Wc1aqQMZP5Q/TKIiHw6hntI/AAAAAAAABHM/YUVrbz2sJBE/s320/MCC+Grad+Kelly+Sturdy+Valley+View+Hospital+1.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5522013609894452946" />
I want to personally thank Mohave Valley Fire Department and Valley View Hospital for allowing me to come take pictures of their "heroes"!! Student training will be from 10 am- 11:30 am in room 509.The Optimal Resume is pretty self explanatory but the SIGI3 is a fabulous tool for students to use to explore career options. They actually can take a personality test and the program will give them different careers that may fit their personality type. Also they can “click” on the different careers and watch a video about “a day in the life” of what a person in that occupation actually does each day. It is worthwhile for the students and it is an excellent tool for faculty and staff to use with students and potential students. Get started NOW!

We still have some second session classes starting in October for those of you who are ready to get some additional credits. However, for those of you just getting started for your first time at college you should be looking forward to starting in January. One of the things you can start working on right now is getting your financial aid ready. If you get your FASFA done now, when it comes time to get registered in November you will be miles ahead of everyone else. Also it is how you can insure you are financially ready to get started. To fill out your FASFA you need to have last years (2009) tax return available for inputing financial information. If you are unsure of how to do your FASFA my suggestion is come do it here at the college in the Financial Aid department. That way you can ask questions if there is something you don't understand. Let's get Financial Aid done now for spring semester.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://dolsonhcbadmissions.blogspot.com/2010/09/financial-aid-for-spring-get-started.html' title='Financial Aid for Spring!!! The presenter will be Dario Hunter, the new Resident Faculty member for the Paralegal program. Mr. Hunter will explore interesting ‘hot button’ topics for discussion and how they relate to the importance of the Constitution in society today. This presentation will give an opportunity for attendees to express their opinions on a number of current issues. With many hot legal issues in the news today, such as immigration, the Ground Zero mosque, and same-sex marriage, Hunter hopes the audience will be partners in the discussion of what these issues have to do with the Constitution and its ever-evolving protection of our rights. According to Hunter, "The Constitution is a living document. I can think of no more fitting a tribute than to continually breathe new life into our ideals as Americans by discussing and debating how the Constitution ensures our freedoms."

Mr. Hunter is originally from New Jersey where he earned his first degree, a Bachelor’s in History at Princeton University. However, he comes to Bullhead City most recently from the Detroit-Windsor metro area where he led a successful practice in Immigration Law. He has earned both an American law degree (J.D.) and a Canadian law degree (LL.B.) as a part of the Joint US-Canada law program between the University of Windsor (Canada) and the University of Detroit Mercy. A member of the Law Society of Upper Canada, Hunter has previously lived in Canada for a number of years where he picked up the French language as well as an avid interest in comparative politics between the US and Canada. He is currently working on a Masters of Laws (LL.M.) degree in Labor and Employment through Wayne State University. Hunter’s experience and education will provide an interesting and knowledgeable presentation of the Constitution. A light lunch will be provided.

For additional information on the Paralegal Program please contact Dario Hunter at (928) 704-7791.

Fork Over Knives Presentation

The Fork Over Knives Presentation is tonight August 10th at 6:30 pm in room 600. Creative movement students did a routine to “Wipe Out” and “Cobra Style” led by instructor Janet Stubblefield, and the theater students did a skit of “Where the Wild Things Are” and “The True Story of the Three Little Pigs”, led by instructor Krissina Torres-Tucker. Despite the most advanced medical technology in the world, we are sicker than ever, by nearly every measure. Two out of three Americans are overweight. Cases of diabetes are exploding, especially among younger people.

About half of Americans take at least one prescription drug. Major medical operations have become routine, driving health care costs to record levels. Heart disease, cancer and stroke are the country’s three leading causes of death, even though billions are spent each year to battle those conditions. Millions suffer from a host of other degenerative diseases.
Mohave Community College, in partnership with the Bullhead City Health Club and The Wellness Forum, will present a local preview of a feature film that examines the theory that most, if not all, of the degenerative diseases that afflict us can be controlled, or even reversed, by a change in diet.

“Forks Over Knives” will be screened in Room 600 on the Bullhead City campus at 3400 Highway 95 on Tuesday, Aug. 10 at 6:30 p.m. The screening is offered at no charge to the public, but seating is limited to the first 200 attendees.

“Forks Over Knifes,” traces the personal journeys of Dr. T. Colin Campbell, a nutritional biochemist from Cornell University, and Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn, a former top surgeon at the world renowned Cleveland Clinic. Inspired by remarkable discoveries in their young careers, these men conducted several groundbreaking studies.

Their separate research led them to the same conclusion: degenerative diseases like heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and even several forms of cancer, could almost always be prevented - and in many cases reversed - by adopting a whole-foods, plant-based diet instead of our present menu of animal-based and processed foods.

Dr. Esselstyn, a top surgeon and head of the Breast Cancer Task Force at the Cleveland Clinic, found that many of the diseases he routinely treated were virtually unknown in parts of the world where animal-based foods were rarely consumed.

The film brings these scientific concepts to life, following “reality patients” with chronic conditions from heart disease to diabetes, who were guided by their doctors to using nutrition as the primary approach to treating their ailments. The “stars” in the film are ordinary people with serious illnesses who experience what might be described as miraculous changes in health.

The film also features leading experts on health, including 11 medical doctors and nutritionists and tackles the issue of diet and disease in a way that gives viewers cause to consider a change in diet.

“The Wellness Forum does not suggest a vegan diet, void of animal protein,” said Don Walker, owner of the Bullhead City Health Club and an advocate of the China Study theory upon which the movie was based.

“We simply recommend a diet that is no more than 10 percent animal protein, abundant in whole, unprocessed foods and low in fats of all kinds,” Walker explained.

“When you break it down, it’s the type of diet that our ancestors followed before refined and processed foods were available and when animal products were a treat instead of a mainstay,” he added.

The film presents the history of nutritional philosophy in America, including our deep commitment to the four food groups and the marketing campaigns that created the foundation for a diet that, according to the researchers, has lead to the explosion of disease.

“The diseases that are killing us today are known as ‘diseases of affluence.’ They are a product of, as the saying goes, ‘living high on the hog,’” Walker said. “When we go back to a basic, plant-based diet with animal protein and fats as a treat instead of a staple, our bodies function more efficiently and we are more likely to live disease free.”

Walker has introduced hundreds of clients in the Bullhead City area to this new way of eating, and the results have been significant. Many have reduced or eliminated their dependence on prescription drugs for high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol and other degenerative diseases.

He will be teaching Wellness 101 as an MCC Community Outreach, non-credit course this fall on the Bullhead City campus. For more information, attend the preview, or call Community Outreach Specialist Natalie Lemire at 928-704-7783.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://dolsonhcbadmissions.blogspot.com/2010/07/forks-over-knives-presentation-dont.html' title='Forks Over Knives Presentation!!! The annual session has something to offer dental professionals in all stages of their career. The students gathered oral health information at Student Table Clinics and the new products at the exhibit hall. They also met student dental hygienists from all over the country. Students are embarking on their new career and learning the importance of networking with other dental professionals and continuing education after graduation at MCC. Under the direction of licensed dentists and hygienists, the students provide preventative dental services such as cleanings, non-surgical periodontal therapy and x-rays for a reduced cost to members of the community. According to the organzation’s Web site: “The heart of StoryCorps is the conversation between two people who are important to each other: a son asking his mother about her childhood, an immigrant telling his friend about coming to America, or a couple reminiscing on their 50th wedding anniversary. By helping people to connect, and to talk about the questions that matter, the StoryCorps experience is powerful and sometimes even life-changing.”

If you know someone who is knowledgeable about the history of our area who might want to participate, please contact Steve Irving at 928-704-9465.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_Wc1aqQMZP5Q/TDNqh5CWMiI/AAAAAAAABGM/LQf9GIEWqC8/s320/DSC_8470.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5490849501173658146" />
Community Services Officer Lorrie Duggins and Public Information Officer Emily Montague of the Bullhead City Police Department will talk about the top scams occurring in our city including identity theft, which is the fastest growing crime in America during “Coffee at the College” at Mohave Community College Bullhead Campus. The 600 building serves as a multipurpose room for numerous school and community events. The main double doors face into the western sun for the majority of the afternoon. The heat gain is considerable and the awning provides shade covering and energy savings to the campus along with a more eye-pleasing façade. Cooper spearheaded efforts to get the awning installed by requesting funds from the MCC Foundation. The disc course will be located near the Nature Trail behind the 400 building. With tremendous partnerships in the community MCC will be able to provide a fun, relaxing recreational activity for our students and the entire tri state area. MCC student honors society Phi Theta Kappa enlisted support from the Community. United Brotherhood of Carpenters, Country Pride Restaurant, Findlay Motors, Bulldog Disposal, Tristate Careflight, R & R Jumps, Kingman Disc Golf Society, Valley View Medical and Disc Golf enthusiast Joe Ekval have all generously pitched in to sponsor the Disc Golf Course. “The collaboration among all the sponsors to promote such a fun, inexpensive recreational activity for our community is wonderful” says MCC Bullhead City Campus dean Shawn Bristle.
According to the Professional Disc Golf Association, “Disc golf is played like traditional golf. Instead of using a ball and clubs, players throw a flying disc, or Frisbee. The sport, which was first played formally in the early 1970’s shares with “ball golf” the goal of completing a hole in the fewest number of strokes-or throws.” At MCC there is no charge to play and is accessible for all ages and athletic ranges.
Disc golfers begin play by throwing a disc toward an elevated target often called a Pole Hole. As a player progresses through the hole he or she must throw each consecutive shot from the spot where the previous throw landed. Trees, shrubs, and in our case cacti, the terrain changes provide challenging obstacles for the golfer. At the finish of the hole, the “putt” lands in the elevated target and the hole is complete.
Disc golfers range from school age to old age, making it an excellent lifetime fitness sport. Whether players are specially-abled or disabled, disc golf is so easy to learn that no one is excluded.
According to the Professional Disc Golf Association, “More people are taking up recreational activities in an effort to improve their health and quality of life. With its combination of upper and lower body conditioning, mental concentration and manual dexterity, disc golf is a great choice for a lifetime sport. MCC is committed to looking for activities to enhance the community’s involvement at the college. The course is expected to be completed by mid July 2010. Mohave Community College looks forward to seeing young and old enjoying the disc golf.

Get a head start on Financial Aid

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_Wc1aqQMZP5Q/TCD0b70pnJI/AAAAAAAABFs/so00uen17Qk/s320/Rebecca+Carranza,+Rebecca+Riddle,+Michelle+SeChrist+and+Micelle+Romero.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5485653106889432210" />
Financial Aid student worker Michelle SeChrist helps from left Rebecca Carranza, Rebecca Riddle and Michelle Romero get a head start on filing their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FASFA). A teenager walked in and recognized him from his band and mentioned the MTV contest for college students. Joe, trying to get his homework done, hurriedly went online while the kid looked on and entered the contest. Joe said “The kid was impressed that although I was in a rock band I was still concerned with my education”. That was the beginning of what has turned into an exciting opportunity for Joe Lengson.

Several weeks later an executive with MTV called and Joe said “ I thought it was a joke” but MTV was very impressed with what he had written to enter the contest. “They liked the diverse types of music I was knowledgeable about”. The executive said he was going to be a finalist in the Mountain Dew contest to represent a new flavor of Mountain Dew and also to get a TV show on MTVUniversity. The TV show will be shown at colleges throughout the country. The MTV executive asked about his schooling and the band he is in and was impressed with the answers. If he wins he will be relocating to New York City where he will be doing the show. The MTV executives has narrowed the competition to 3 contestants. Voting will be counted until June 11th and anyone who wants can go to http://www.mtv.com/asm/dewmocracy/mtvu/ and vote for Joe!

Joe’s path began in 2007 while attending Mohave High School he enrolled in Dual Enrollment classes, which started his college education. Dual enrollment is high school students who receive college and high school credits for college level classes taught at the high school. Initially he thought he may want to go into the medical field and had a job at a local hospital. He took a semester off and when he came back he decided he wanted to major in English. He was in a classroom at MCC in Bullhead City when he got offered the job to tour with the band Mychildren Mybride. Joe says “ my professor Paul Bower’s was one of the first people to encourage me to do both. How often do you have an opportunity like this and you can do on line classes. I have now done both and have not had to compromise. I feel like when I am not in school I am not preparing for my future.”

Joe has also written a book and has found a publisher interested in publishing his memoir of living on the road with a rock band. He is hoping in the next year it will be published. In the last year he has performed in 300 shows and is in a different city every night. This week he is in Nashville shooting a music video. Although he has a very busy schedule, his education is still foremost in his mind. Once he has completed his AA degree with MCC he will continue on to a university. Our team started walking at Friday night at 6pm and walked until 8 am Saturday morning. The Student Nursing Association came with kids in tow to participate. They raised money for the event by having people pay to sign the shirt they walked in. The event goal was to earn $110,000 for the American Cancer Society. Before the relay started they had raised over $60,000. and the night of the event there were lots of booths raising money and raffles galore. And the food was terrific. One of my favorite fundraisers to participate in was the bead count. You pay $2.00 for a piece of yarn and every time you do one lap you string a bead on your yarn. Three pink beads and then a white bead equals one mile. I loved collecting the beads. It motivated you to walk, walk, walk and collect as many miles as your feet could take. I heard one man walked a total of 37 miles and one lady did 36 miles. WOW my hat is off to them! What an accomplishment. We had a great time and you can still contribute to the team. Just contact me and I will help you make the donation. Thanks to all who participated!!! Now lets start planning for next years walk.

Siete de Mayo

Thanks so much for the Library hosting the Siete de Mayo event in 210 today for lunch. It was so beautiful to see students rewarded for their hard work and dedication. They are truly the best and brightest!!! There were so many highlights of the ceremony, I have a hard time deciding what I loved the most. I was most touched when Nona Talayumptewa presented the Julie Talayumptewa Art Award. For 8 years she has given the $500.00 cash award to an art student in honor of her daughter Julie who passed away 8 years ago. This years recipient was Gregg Tucker. It was very touching. Of course my congratulations go out to each and every one of the students!!! They all have done a phenomenal job. All of the faculty and staff are so proud of each and every one of them. JOB WELL DONE!!! See you at the commencement next Friday at the AVI Convention Center! They were amazed watching Dr. Ray show them how to blow up a balloon using a beaker. He also showed them how mixing certain compounds created a colorful volcano. They said "it's magic" he told them no "that's science!" They also got to go into the auto shop's and see what's under a car, and how it moves, how to repair collision damage and repaint a car. They visited nursing, dental, the library, and Mr. Don talk about dinosaurs and of course culinary. And at the end of the tour they were treated to cake and cookies and juice. What a fun day. My hope is that what they saw at the college today will give them ideas about going to college. I love seeing their bright little faces and see how excited they are about learning.

Student Life Night at Bullhead Campus

WOW was last night fun. Our Student Life Campus Night was a huge success. Over 400 students came to participate in the event. Cathy Stubblefield who is the advisor for student life organized the event and included not only College Clubs but also had Community Organizations available to speak to students about services available. Food was served by the Culinary Department and WOW was it fabulous. I think Chef G Michael and gang make the best pizzas, they Rock!! I love them!!! They also had wontons, steaks on a skewer, chicken wings and lots of cookies. As you can tell by the pictures, everyone enjoyed the food. Also on hand the band Bristickel provided music for the students. They played out behind the 200 building and and students loved sitting out back in the beautiful weather and enjoyed the tunes. What a nice evening for all.

Student involvment in the Campus clubs and activities is an excellent way for students to become more engaged in College Life and Community Involvement. Studies have show students involved in Campus Life or Community Involvment have a greater success rate and greater networking opportunities when searching for career opportunities. We at the college are so committed to see our students succeed and I think the students really saw that last night and many were excited to get signed up for various clubs. I heard the new Running Club was very popular last night and got alot of new members. Also thanks to Lorrie Duggins and the Bullhead Police Department for bringing the Beer Googles I think everyone had fun and really saw how impaired you are when you drink.

The Colleges THANKS goes out to everyone who participated in the event. Chef G Michael Harris and his wonderful culinary class worked with the HS students preparing a menu of food items. They worked on wontons, chicken wings, steaks on a skewer, individual pizzas, cookies and more. After a morning of cooking they enjoyed eating pizzas and cookies for lunch. We have been out in the community doing presentations to various groups and also on campus assisting students with the registration process. Also we have had some fabulous presentations on campus. This month Dr. Robert Lock did a presentation on arthritis and joint replacement. We had a full house. Over 70 people came to listen to Dr. Lock. One of the most wonderful things about Dr. Lock is he will answer everyone's questions and explain how we can live a healthier life. Keep a look out because we will be having him back in the future. You definetely don't want to miss it. We also had a Coffee at the College on how to save electricity. It is the way of the future. How can we save not only money but leave less of a footprint on our environment. Next week we also have our Senior Health Series. This is a free event to the seniors in our community. It is on Feb. 2nd from 10 am to 12 pm. Pass this information along to any seniors you may think would be interested. Also my leadership class has been busy helping the community get a dog park in Bullhead City. We have selected the location in Rotary Park and now we are doing community surveys and working on the design and financing. It will be a fabulous addition to our community. Back to work for me!!!! Watch for future events here on my blog!!!

New Classes Starting

The new semester has begun!!! Classes start the week of January 25th, so if you have not registered, you need to either get registered on line or come in to meet with an advisor. Classes are filling up! Don't wait until the last minute or you may not get the class you want.

I will be at Westcare tomorrow distributing information for anyone who wants to stop by and see me. I will be there at 10:00 am and hope to see anyone interested in getting information.

What a great way to start off the new year with planning a new future for yourself and family. Our Pumpkinfest was a huge success thanks to the many staff and faculty that helped to make it one of the best Pumpkinfests we have seen. We had between 600 and 700 kids and then their parents on top of that. Everyone came out to enjoy good safe trick or treating and games. I had so many parents comment on how wonderful it was that the college does this every year. It was a terrific evening and I think we all enjoyed seeing all the kids dressed up. I know Shawn had a hard time picking a winner at the costume judging contest. He thought it was an honor being the judge. But found out it was probably one of the most difficult things about Pumpkinfest. We think they should all be winners. All the kids were wonderful. A special thanks goes out to Craig Baker and all the work he did on his display in front of the computer center. The kids loved the witch and the scarecrow. And if I ever need a flying monkey to fight my battles I know where to go get one. Also a big thanks to nursing and their haunted hospital. It was just the right amount of scary. Wonderful job. Thanks to all the staff and faculty!!!!! You are all beyond great and I feel privileged to work with each and everyone of you. One last thing pass around my blog so the parents can see their kids pictures. They all wanted to know how to get to my blog and I hope they remember my instructions.

I am already plotting and planning new ideas for next year's pumpkinfest. My office looks like a pumpkin exploded in here. I have pumpkins, games, tombstones, and who knows what else filling up my office. I have to walk sideways to get in here. But we have alot of fun planned for the event. I got my costume via UPS delivered yesterday. I was starting to worry about it arriving in time. I tried it on last night to make sure it fit and everything looked okay. You can be the judge on Friday :). At least I will be in school colors. All plans have been done and I believe we will have a wonderful time. All the staff and faculty loves to see the kids in their costumes. The Sealant Program is operated by a grant provided by the Legacy Foundation and the Delta Dental Foundation. It's mission is to provide the Sealant, which is a plastic coating on their permanent molars. The plastic coating is painted on biting surfaces of permanent molars. This seals out decay. The goal is to get the kids through the decay prone years. The reason for the selection of second and sixth graders is that second graders have their first molars and sixth graders have their second molars. All of the kids enjoyed their visit to the Dental Clinic. Our wonderful Staff and Students made sure they felt very welcome.

Pumpkinfest is Coming!!!!

Next week October 30th is the Pumpkinfest from 4 pm to 6 pm. One of MCC traditions to celebrate Halloween with the community. This year the Bullhead Campus is going to be doing it a little different than in years past. We are going to have a "Trick or Treat Trail" starting in the 600 building. Kids will come to 600 building and get their map to all the trick or treat sites on campus. We will be having games at the sites and trick or treating. The Nursing Program will be having a fabulous Haunted House in their facilities. I am sure it will be scary and fun. Also Dental has a new game this year to play with the kids called Dental Duckys. At 5:30 we will have a costume contest for children. The categories will be 0-4 year olds, 5-9 year olds and 10-13 year olds. So bring your kids and enjoy all the fun!!

Once again a Mommie and Me group was on the Bullhead Campus cooking with Chef G. They followed the same menu as the kids from last week and the they had just as much fun as the group from last week. I also think the Mommie's had a blast watching their little ones work in the kitchen. What a wonderful success!!! Chef G. Michael and his culinary class stepped up and provided some yummy food. There were of course the traditional hot dogs and chips but also they had chili, baked beans, ribs, pizza and my personal favorite veggie burgers. And let me tell you they were not the usual veggie burgers. They were absolutely delicious. Everyone raved about all the food. It was a wonderful opportunity for students and staff to mingle and discuss college life, classes, and whatever came to mind. Everyone had a terrific time and we were crowded until closing. Cathy Stubblefield did a wonderful job as the advisor for Student Government, assisting in making this such a fabulous event. Also PTK members were there and donated sodas for the evening. I know everyone was saying when can we do this again? I am sure once the news gets around about how nice this was we will have double the attendance at the next student event. Also make sure you check out the slideshow of pictures of the evening.

Mommy and Me with Chef G. First they made their applesauce then they made cupcakes and each child frosted and decorated the cupcakes with M & M's. Then onto the pizza. They rolled out the dough and dressed them with their favorite toppings. To top it all off they then learned how to set the tables and place their feasts on the table. I wanted to update you on some of the events coming up in the next couple of weeks at Mohave Community College. On October 8th from 3-7 pm there will be a free Depression Screening workshop at the college. We are hosting it in conjunction with Mohave Mental Health and Westcare. We will have screenings for depression and other mental illnesses. Also there will be assistance with drug and alcohol screenings and there will be screenings for oral cancer. There will be counselors available to speak with folks who need additional assistance. We hope that if you feel down in the dumps you come and talk to the mental health staff and see how you can get help.

What fun we had!

This past weekend was the Mohave County Fair. What a great time we had!!! The fair is a great place to meet future students and connect with current and past students. I met some people who really are concerned about their future and what direction they wanted to pursue. One of the wonderful things about MCC is the ability to meet with terrific Career counselors. Sometimes folks have no idea what they want to do. It is a tremendous help to take advantage of meeting with a Career Counselor who can assist in developing an educational plan. They also are talented in bringing out career ideas that maybe people haven't thought about. They can certainly put you on the right track.

Take advantage of the excellent help a Career Counselor can give you and give them a call and make an appointment. What do you have to lose?

Semester is in full swing

Well the semester is in full swing!! It was just a few weeks before Joseph Healey was starting the nursing program at Mohave Community College in Bullhead City. It ended as the day Joseph saved the lives of 2 children and lost his leg.

On July 17th Joseph was spending the day with his 16 year old son visiting with friends from California at Lake Havasu's Nautical Inn Cove. His friend's children ages 6,4 and 3 were delightfully playing in the water. Joseph and his son were enjoying good company when Joseph noticed a boat backing into where the children were playing and noticed the churning of the prop approach 2 of the children. Without a thought about his own safety he jumped into the water and pushed the children to safety as the propeller of the boat sliced through his lower leg, almost severing his foot. Joseph remained calm and got to shore and thankfully, nearby, off duty Lake Havasu firefighters ran to render aid. They were able to keep his bleeding under control until paramedics arrived. Joseph was rushed to Lake Havasu hospital where he was stabilized and then flown to Sunrise Hospital in Las Vegas. It took two surgeries, one to remove his foot and another to remove more leg due to a spiral tibia fibula fracture. His leg was removed to his calve.

Joseph has always had a love of the medical field. He is employed at Western Arizona Regional Medical Center as a Cardiac Monitor Tech. He has been working toward being accepted to Mohave Community College's RN program for a little over a year. Joseph's 4.0 grade point average earned him a place in the nursing program. He was excited to start his nursing program in August. Due to this traumatic injury he was not able to start with his fellow classmates that he has been going through the prerequisites with. However, his spot will be ready for him to start in January. He is determined to be ready.

Since his injury his progress has been nothing less than stellar. He has the good fortune of having a loving wife with a Master's Degree in nursing, who has given him first class care since his return home. Joseph, the father of two son's ages 16 and 4, regrets that his 16 year old son had to witness the terrible accident. Joseph has been working hard at rehabilitation. He had his prosthesis on after 3 weeks and was walking after 5 weeks. It has been difficult for him and his family, but Joseph wants to look forward. He feels this experience will make him a better nurse. He says he has more understanding and compassion for someone who is injured. This experience has tested his spirit and he is coming out a winner. Not only is he thankful that the children's lives were spared, but that his family has been so supportive. Joseph is back to work 2 days a week, eleven hour shifts. It is 22 hours a week, but bills need to be paid. Joseph is a shining example of the human spirit.

The staff of the Western Arizona Regional Medical Center emergency room has organized a charity event on Thursday September 3rd at Buffalo Wild Wings in Bullhead City. The restaurant will donate 15% of the proceeds for every patron who brings in a "Come Support Joe Healey" charity flyer. You can pick up the charity flyer at Mohave Community College-Bullhead City in the Administration Building.

Joseph has proven to be a true hero and will be an extraordinary example to family, friends and fellow students as he moves forward. MCC is proud he is one of their students. We salute our community hero.

Late Start Classes are starting soon!!!

It is not to late to get some credits for the fall semester. Often times in the rough and tumble weeks prior to classes starting it is hard to get quality time with an advisor. Right now is the perfect time. The rush is over. Advisors have time to talk about future plans and help you design a program to accomplish your goals. Everyone should meet with their advisor at least once a year to make sure you are on track. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine as children do. It's not just in some of us; it is in everyone. And as we let our own lights shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.

Dual Enrollment

August 17 thru the 20th we will be at Mohave High School to get students registered for Dual Enrollment. All students remember to bring a picture ID.

Dual Enrollment is high school students taking a college class in their high school classroom. They will receive college credits and high school credits. It is a wonderful way to get a big jumpstart on your college education.

Students in Dual Enrollment classes must take an assessment that qualifies them for college classes.

So look for us next week on the MHS campus.

Registration

Although fall semester starts early this year at Mohave Community college, August 17th, registration will remain open through August 24th.

Students have one week after the start of the semester to add or drop classes. It is also a good time for our "Ageless Academic"--students who are at least 55 years of age, to sign up to audit classes. The cost to audit a class is just $10.00 per credit hour plus the technology fee.

Many of our mature residents enjoy lifelong learning and aren't really interested in taking classes for grades and full college credit. They just want to learn for personal enrichment and tey appreciate the reduced rate for auditing classes. Audit enrollment is only offered during the add/drop week and is available after classes have sufficient credit enrollment. We need to assure that students who need the courses for credit toward their degrees will have a place in the class, and that classes have reached minimum enrollment before we admit auditors for personal enrichment.

Orientation

If you are a new student at Mohave Community College make sure you attend one of our orientations.
